I agree that the canonical implementations should generally be
recursive. I agree that recursion requires the fewest assumptions and
imposes the fewest constraints. In addition, I believe that it's the
most mathematically tractable, should we ever with to formally verify or
otherwise mathematically manipulate the canonical implementations.
