Proposals for change to 1164

Subject: Proposals for change to 1164

Dear colleagues,

I have updated the P1164 web pages at www.eda.org/vhdl-std-logic to
include a list of proposals for changes to the standard. At the meeting
in February, those present suggested prioritizing proposals into three
categories:

- easy (address in the 2001 revision)
- hard (defer to after the 2001 round)
- defer pending coordination with other standards

A first cut allocation of proposals to categories is included in the
minutes of that meeting. Based on that, here is a more complete
prioritization. (Note that this is a priority for considering the
proposals, and does not imply that the proposals will be implemented.)

Easy:

  CP-001 Uncomment xnor operators
CP-002 Add shift operators for vector types
  CP-003 Add array/scalar logical operators
CP-005 Make vector result subtypes same as 1076 operators
CP-006 Add logical reduction operations (but not operators)
CP-007 Provide text I/O package for standard logic
(Note: Steve Bailey investigating donation of
           packages by Synopsys)

Hard:

  CP-004 Add capacitive drive strength

Defer pending coordination:

  CP-006 Add logical reduction operators
          (coordinate with 1076 and 1076.3)
CP-008 Provide formatted I/O with selection of radix
(coordinate with 1076 to provide for bit_vector also)
  CP-009 Provide 'image attribute
(coordinate with 1076 to provide for
          all composite types)

If you would like to add proposals to the list, please feel free to post
them to vhdl-std-logic@eda.org for discussion. I would invite you to
nominate which of the above categories any new proposals should go in.
In order to keep to an achievable schedule, I would like to place a
cut-off date of Friday 15 June for any proposals to be considered for
the 2001 revision. We can then nail down the "easy" list at the DAC
meeting (to be ratified by email).

I would also welcome discussion of the proposals already on the list.
Are they prioritized into the right categories? Are the proposed
solutions ok?

Cheers,

PA
