Accessing Documents and Literature on the VHDL International Users' Forum Internet Services system 13 Jan 1996, ver 1.5 ******************************************************************************** NOTE: Update of 2/15/00. For security reasons, most of the anonymous / guest methods of access have been disabled. Only HTTP access for the public is available. Other forms of access may be enabled but only for administrative use. Also, since 1997, the machine is hosting multiple domains; not just vhdl.org. eda.org has become the main hosted domain. ******************************************************************************** Many reference documents and related information are all available via the VHDL International Users' Forum (VIUF) Internet Services (VIIS) Machine. You can access and download files in many different ways. Each is described further here. Internet Access: ---------------- Service Name Address Account Name (no password) ------------- ------------------- -------------------------- telnet telnet.vhdl.org guest, anonymous ftp ftp.vhdl.org anonymous gopher gopher.vhdl.org - WWW, Mosaic http://www.vhdl.org - For account access methods, use your email address as the password. Remember to set "binary" mode for any binary files (*.doc, *.fm, *.xls) you may elect to receive under ftp. Many links to other repositories are only available via the gopher or WWW access mechanisms. Email Access: (CURRENTLY DISABLED) ------------- There is an automatic file archive server which is accessible via email. Send an email message to: archive@vhdl.org. The subject is ignored. You communicate with the server through commands in the body of your mail message. It then responds automatically to your request. The following is a summary of useful commands you could send in the body of your mail message. help To get a help file on available commands path someone@vhdl.org To assure the correct return address is used (it is recommended to always use this command) send docs pub.access.txt To get this document send docs groups.txt To get a list of groups supported on the machine index vi/vital To get a listing of files (in vi/vital for example) send vi/vital 00README To get a file (download vi/vital/00README) As an example, for Joe Smith of XYZ (login name "joes") to get the information about the VHDL International portion of the repository, he would send an email request to "archive@vhdl.org" with the following body: path joes@xyz.com send vi 00README Dial-Up Access: (DISABLED) --------------- Dial-up to the vhdl.org system at 415.335.0110. Any baud (upto 14,400), parity, start & stop bits, and v.* settings will do. Login using the "guest" account name. Hit return for the first password prompt and enter your email address for the second. Once in, simple UNIX commands such as "cd vi/vital", "ls" and "cat 00README" are available. Also, you can download desired files by using "kermit", "zmodem" or "sz" (send zmodem). As in the dial-in case, simple UNIX commands are available along with "kermit", "zmodem", etc. if you telnet in. General ------- In general, most documents are available in source (binary) form (such as WORD, EXCEL or FrameMaker formats), in an ASCII exchange format (such as RTF, SyLK, and MIF; respectively), and in postscript ready to be sent to your printer directly. The file size increases accordingly as you move away from the source form. If you have any problems, send an email to support@vhdl.org. docs/pub.access.txt
